Jimi Kleinbruinink

Jimi Kleinbruinink's artistic practice focusses on making sculptures, (light) installations and monumental spatial projects. In the process, he embraces the unpredictability of his work. His works are both large and light and defy gravity. It is a balance between tight and organic forms and an exercise in improvisation within a fixed structure.

The work is shown both in exhibition spaces, where it relates to art discourse, and in public space, where it is in direct contact with everyday life. He wants to offer the viewer a strong sensory experience, a super stimulus, and secondly only address it rationally or intellectually.

The interplay of methodology and well-thought-out step-by-step plans on the one hand and improvisation and play in addition, provides a creative foundation from which he creates an image. In this way, there is room for serendipity and an infinitely complex and intriguing spectacle can arise from simplicity.

As a creator, he is looking for materials, processes and phenomena that carry a metaphorical or poetic meaning. Through abstraction, he tries to create images that do not refer to anything else, but do make a statement about a certain facet of human experience or perception.

For the Art Night, Kleinbruinink will build an abstract monumental installation on site. It is a whimsical, fine-meshed construction of bamboo and rope. These types of installations are an ongoing part of his practice, each project is based on different concepts and formal principles. The lining of the line play is an important visual element in this installation. The work seems to move because it is 'activated' by the viewer's own movement. From each position the viewer takes, the sculpture shows a different composition or 'drawing'.
