Rozario’s Rave Organs

Mees brings his Rave Organs—hybrids of street organs and sound systems. Built to bring people together to celebrate and shake up the streets, these creations are powered by cranks and sensors, paying tribute to rave culture, mechanics, and collective joy.
During Kunstnacht Nijmegen, I’ll be presenting two of these Rave Organs. They are sculptures, instruments, and speakers all at once: mobile stages for music, theatre, and performance. My organ plays remixes, rave classics, and unexpected sounds that whimsically reference both folk culture and the underground.
The street organ is an icon of folk culture and urban life, while the sound system symbolizes freedom, protest, and community. By merging these worlds, a DIY machine emerges—making noise and raising questions. My project uses the familiar form of the street organ to claim space where sound systems are often unwelcome.
The only good system is a sound system.
Mees is a designer and recent graduate of Product Design at ArtEZ Arnhem, increasingly immersed in sound system culture and fascinated by street musicians. His work moves between sculpture, music, and performance, always attentive to the tension between celebration and activism.
