What happens when art doesn’t wait for its audience, but takes to the city itself?

On Saturday afternoon, September 19, from 12:00 to 17:00, art and the people who make it will pop up in unexpected places throughout Nijmegen city centre, among coffee, haircuts, fries, and the everyday rhythm of city life.

Programme: Tussen Kunst en Nacht

Discover the following artists and their work at five different locations:

Michiel van der Werf X Cafetaria Vuurens, Smetiusstraat 16

Visual artist Michiel van der Werf (1987) explores how art reaches people, and how visitors can be guided, restricted, and tempted along the way. In his work, he designs spaces and situations that encourage visitors to experience art in a different way. His practice balances art, experimentation, and a subtle form of audience manipulation. He does not want to tell people what to think, but rather to make them briefly question what they would normally take for granted.

At Cafetaria Vuurens, Michiel van der Werf presents his project Frietjespolitiek (Fries Politics).

Niko Démoed X Café Goossens, Grote Markt 31A

Artist Niko Démoed (1994) works with steel, plastics, and raw photography. Her practice is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between material and print, inspired by the transience of the human body and the traces of time found in artefacts she collects from nature.

At Café Goossens, she became interested in the intimacies that can unfold in a café: an accidental touch, a fleeting glance, or the sense of loneliness that people can experience there. Niko is creating new work inspired by these encounters.

Johnny Buivenga X Daggers Barbershop, In de Betouwstraat 20

In his paintings, Johnny Buivenga (1992) focuses on the inner world of human experience: emotions, feelings, and thoughts. Sometimes these are his own; sometimes they belong to the people around him. What takes place within us, in relation to others or to the society we live in, is translated into oil paint on canvas.

At Daggers Barbershop, themes such as the construction of identity, the internalised critic, the complexity of intimate relationships, the friction between human nature and the society we live in, performance pressure, social media, and demanding beauty standards come to life. In a place where appearance plays an important role, Johnny’s work opens up a conversation about what this means to us as human beings.

Driegitakt – Nieuwe Elektronische Waar X Coffeeshop De Kronkel, Vlaamsegas 30

Driegitakt takes you on an acoustic journey of discovery, from atmospheric soundscapes to abrasive dance floors. The trio, consisting of No Barbie, vanta, and Sophia d’Rêve, intertwines their different musical worlds using the Elektron Digitakt, complemented by a broad palette of sounds and samples.

For the presentation at De Kronkel, the collective’s unique sound comes together in a live set that begins as an atmospheric whisper and gradually unfolds into an ode to the dance floor. Unfortunately, vanta cannot be present, but her own samples and sounds will be incorporated into the set by the other two performers especially for this occasion.

Marc Sylla X Kushiin, Ziekerstraat 136

Marc Sylla (1993) combines painting, fashion, and sculpture with tribal and contemporary influences. Bones and masks merge with fashion and graffiti. His work forms a bridge between African cultural references and Western pop culture, incorporating symbols and iconography from both worlds. With roots in Guinea and a Dutch upbringing, he explores the interplay between these two cultural worlds.

At Kushiin’s new space, Marc will be painting live. Come and talk to him; the encounters that emerge there will inevitably find their way back into his art.
